Meet our 5th Secret Hero – Colin Levin, CEO of Oceans Alive Conservation Trust (NPO). Oceans Alive Conservation Trust is a registered non-profit, global conservation and public benefit organization dedicated to saving and protecting our oceans and our coastal environments.Adopt-a-School and Ocean Warriors
In the words of our 5th Secret hero CEO, Colin Levin.“We believe children are the future and teaching them about conservation at a young age will create awareness and respect for the natural world.”
The Oceans Alive Conservation Trust Adopt-a-School project aims to sponsor and provide young learners with a unique and very special awareness and educational experience to learn about marine life and the Ocean.
In 2022, 1480 Addington Primary School learners were able to visit the uShaka Marine World Aquarium in collaboration with the SAAMBR Education Centre to learn about pollution, plastic responsibility, marine life, the ocean and how we can all play a very personal role in protecting and caring for our rivers, our oceans and our precious marine life.
In addition to sponsoring students and educating them with regards to their personal responsibility to our environment and oceans, the Oceans Alive Conservation Trust Ocean Warriors are children actively involved in organised beach clean-ups and are hard at work to help save the environment.

Saving the Mangroves project
In 2022 the heavy seas caused severe damage to the beaches and coastal sand dunes in and around the area of the Durban Umgeni River Estuary. The Beachwood mangroves, situated at the Estuary are completely reliant on the intertidal exchange of seawater and nutrients for survival. The Marine life living in the estuary were cut off from the river and ocean and the necessary tidal exchange needed for survival.
Mangroves are an important habitat for sea life, birds and animals. It is also a breeding area for at least 48 species of birds.
Oceans Alive Conservation Trust together with various partners started the enormous task to open up the mangroves and successfully reconnected the necessary tidal exchange using extra heavy-duty excavating and earthmoving equipment.
After 5 days of hard work, the “save the Beachwood Mangroves Nature Reserve” project was a success! We could not have done this without the dedicated support received from Teichmann Group, Morgado Civils, SAAMBR, ORI, Adopt-a-River and Marshall Security.
“It was truly an honour to receive a token of appreciation from Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife honorary officers. The project was a huge success, thanks to everyone who cametogether, to make this possible.”
CEO, Colin Levin.
Together we are stronger and we can help our oceans and future.

Beach clean up
Plastic pollution and solid waste is a serious problem for our rivers, beaches and our oceans.“At Oceans Alive Conservation Trust we believe that we are all responsible for our rivers, our beaches, and our oceans and we know that we can make a difference by working together.”
CEO, Colin Levin.
Educating ourselves and children about pollution, plastic waste management, and demonstrating responsible behaviour to help clean up our natural environment is crucial.
Oceans Alive Conservation trust has partnered with various foundations to do monthly beach clean ups in Durban (Umhlanga), Saldanha Bay, Knysna, Plettenberg Bay and Hout bay.
